COMPSOC will be hosting its second Linux Installfest for 2004 this upcoming
Sunday (August 15) from 11 am to 5:30pm. It will be held in the Oboe CSE labs
on the ground floor of the Electrical Engineering building [map]. We'll be open and FREE for everyone, but CSE students will take priority if we are pushed for time.
The distributions we'll be recommending for students include Debian, Fedora and Mandrake, but we'll also be willing to provide and install others.
|
| If you'd like to come to the Installfest to get Linux installed
on your computer please send an email to compsoc.installfest@cse.
We'll also be providing free pizza for people volunteering on
the day. Register by emailing compsoc.volunteers@cse.
We'd also love to know the following in advanced:
- How new is your hardware (especially video cards and
SATA)?
- What previous experience you may have had with Linux.
- Do you have a preferred distribution you'd like
installed?
If you haven't decided yet, please read: DistroWatch's
summary.
Preparing
Before you come to the Installfest, please
- Defrag your hard drive and set aside at least 3GB.
- You can create your own partitions or resize preexisting ones if you know what you're doing; otherwise we can do it for you.
- Back up all important data on your computer in case
something does go wrong. COMPSOC will not accept any
responsibility for accidental data loss.
- If you have some spare time, search the web for Linux
compatibility information for some of your hardware. It will potentially
save us a lot of time and pain if we know of your computer's special requirements beforehand.
On the day
Please remember to bring in:
- Power cables and hardware manuals.
- CRT Monitors and PS/2 mice and keyboards will be available.
If your computer uses a LCD or USB peripherals, you might want
to bring them in as well.
- $10 if you wish to purchase Linux CDs on the day (subject
to availability).
Hope to see you there,
Andrew "Netsnipe" Lau
COMPSOC President
What's Linux? It's an operating system that started out
as a hobby by Linus Torvalds, a university student in Finland
back in 1991. Since then it has matured into one of the world's
most popular opensource operating systems. And if you haven't
noticed, it's also the choice of OS at CSE.
Why Linux? It's free: in more ways than one. It's free to
download and redistribute, but more importantly it's free as in
liberty. You're free to read the source, free to change whatever
you see fit and free to share them with others.
With volunteers in the hundreds of thousands all contributing
to Linux and software that runs on, it's becoming more reliable
and faster every day. Linux has software to cover any need from
productivity (OpenOffice) to development (gcc), and in most cases
outshine commercial software.
Is Linux hard? It's not as hard as some make it out to be
if you're willing to read the free and comprehensive
documentation (e.g. The Linux
Documentation Project. And if you still need more help,
there's vibrant user communities everywhere online such as the
Sydney Linux Users' Group
and COMPSOC's own support mailing list: compsoc.linuxsupport. |
